Leak Detection by Prime Flow

High water bills, damp patches, unexplained meter movement and recurring mould can all point to a hidden leak. Prime Flow investigates the likely source before unnecessary breaking begins.

What we help with

Leaks behind walls
Under-floor and slab leaks
Garden and underground lines
Leaks between apartment levels

Before the plumber arrives

  • Check whether the water meter moves when all taps are closed.
  • Photograph visible damp or water damage.
  • Avoid opening walls or floors until the likely leak zone is narrowed down.

Worth Knowing

Finding a leak before opening anything

The wet patch is rarely above the leak. Water travels along pipe runs, across slabs and down through ceilings before it shows, so cutting into the visible damp is often cutting into the wrong place. Tracing first is not an upsell; it is what keeps the repair small.

The usual trigger is a water bill that has climbed with no visible cause. On a property with irrigation, a pool, or a long buried supply run, that can continue for months unnoticed — which in Johannesburg water tariffs adds up fast.

Signs worth acting on

  • A meter that moves with every tap closed
  • Water bill up with no change in usage
  • Damp or discoloured patches on walls or ceilings
  • Warm spots on a floor, which can indicate a hot-water line
  • Persistently green grass in one area during dry months

How a leak gets traced

  • Isolate sections in turn to narrow the run
  • Pressure-test the isolated section
  • Acoustic and moisture tracing to a point
  • Open only the confirmed location

A simple check you can do yourself: close every tap and appliance, then read the meter, wait an hour, and read it again. If it has moved, water is going somewhere. That single test tells a plumber more than any description of the symptoms.

Common questions

Can you find a leak without damaging my floors?

That is the point of tracing. Detection narrows the location before anything is opened, so the excavation or the cut is confined to the section that has actually failed.

My water bill doubled but I cannot see anything wrong.

Common, and usually a buried supply line, an irrigation fault, or a slow cistern. All three are invisible from inside the house and all three are cheap to find.

Does a running toilet really cost that much?

It can. A cistern that runs continuously wastes a surprising volume over a month, and it is one of the most frequent causes of an unexplained bill increase.
